Stage 4

The transformation of Bristol’s Brabazon Hangars brings a major entertainment venue into an existing industrial structure. Griffiths Evans’ MEP design connects the demands of a 20,000-capacity arena with an all-electric approach to energy.

The challenge.

A major arena brings together large audiences, event production and substantial heating, cooling and power requirements. At Aviva Arena, these demands sit within the reuse of the Brabazon Hangars at Filton Airfield. The engineering brief called for building services that support the venue while responding to YTL’s ambition to tackle climate change.

Our appointment.

Griffiths Evans has provided the full mechanical, electrical and public health design service, from concept through to RIBA Stage 4, including coordinated construction drawings. Our work brings the electrical strategy, renewable generation, energy storage and thermal systems into a coordinated design.

02The engineering response

How the design comes together.

An all-electric venue

The design uses an all-electric approach to building services. Energy generation, storage and the use of recovered heat are considered together as parts of the venue’s engineering strategy.

Solar generation and storage

A 1.3 MWp solar photovoltaic system forms part of the design, alongside a battery energy storage system. This combines on-site renewable generation with the ability to store electricity for later use.

Recovering useful heat

An ambient-temperature heat-sharing network recovers waste heat from cooling processes for use in hot-water generation and space heating. Energy that would otherwise be rejected becomes a useful input elsewhere in the building.

Making recovered heat useful

  1. Heat from cooling processes
  2. Ambient-temperature heat-sharing network
  3. Hot-water generation and space heating
Simplified thermal design principle. Solar photovoltaics and battery storage form separate parts of the electrical strategy.

03Design benefits

Designed to make energy work harder.

  • Reuse an existing aviation structure as the setting for a new entertainment destination.
  • Recover useful heat and integrate on-site solar generation within the arena’s energy strategy.
  • Provide coordinated MEP design information through RIBA Stage 4.
