Lighting for play, broadcast and the stadium experience.
Croke Park, home of the Gaelic Athletic Association, commissioned a major lighting upgrade to support its programme of sporting events, concerts and international fixtures. The project brought together broadcast-quality LED pitch lighting and enhanced stadium presentation, with improved energy efficiency, reliability and maintainability.
Our appointment
Griffiths Evans developed the Employer’s Requirements for procurement of the specialist design-and-build installation. The brief translated the stadium’s sporting, broadcast and operational needs into performance requirements for the field of play, spectator bowl, electrical infrastructure and lighting controls.
Lighting for play and broadcast
The field-of-play requirements addressed illumination levels, uniformity, colour rendering, glare and flicker, with criteria covering Gaelic games, football, rugby and NFL events. Integration with the existing roof, gantries and floodlighting masts was a key consideration, alongside maintaining stadium operations throughout the works.
A colour-changing stadium bowl
For the spectator bowl, the brief included an RGBW colour-changing lighting option across the seating tiers. Coordinated controls were specified to synchronise the bowl and pitch lighting with audio, display screens and sports presentation systems, enabling dynamic lighting scenes and a more engaging event atmosphere.
Resilience and long-term operation
The Employer’s Requirements also covered emergency lighting, resilient controls, manual overrides, testing, commissioning, operator training and maintenance provisions, establishing a clear basis for procurement and verification of the specialist installation.
Musco Lighting and McSherry Electrical were announced as the delivery partners for the LED upgrade, timed for Croke Park’s September 2025 NFL fixture.
